Doyle Brunson to Sit Out 2011 WSOP Main Event – “No Main Event for Me”

The $10,000 Main Event of the 2011 World Series of Poker shuffles up this week, thousands of poker players are expected to take part in the biggest poker tournament in the world, there will be a noticeable missing link at the Rio this year. Doyle Brunson will not be in attendance.

One of only eighteen living members of the Poker Hall of Fame, Brunson announced Monday morning via Twitter that he will be sitting out the No-Limit Hold’em World Championship this year, tweeting, “No main event for me.”  In the same tweet, he took a shot at the United States Department of Justice for its actions against online poker, adding, “maybe the DOJ will stake me.”

Brunson’s decision is not being made because of lack of funds. Responding to many of comments, Brunson said, “Tx for all the tweets about my skipping the main event. It’s not about money, I’ve lost a lot of passion for the game since Black Friday.”

Brunson hasn’t had much success in big tournaments in the past few years. He placed 24th in May’s World Poker Tour Championship, 18th in last December’s WPT event that bear’s his name (2010 Doyle Brunson Five Diamond World Poker Classic), 17th in the 2009 WSOP-Europe Main Event, and made the final table in the 2009 WSOP Seven Card Stud Hi/Lo event.

Doyle Brunson has won ten WSOP gold bracelets, tied with Jonny Chan for second all-time. He won his last bracelet in 2005, when he won the $5,000 Short Handed No-Limit Hold’em event. He started his bracelet run by winning five from 1976 through 1978, including back-to-back Main Event championships in 1976 and 1977.

There is no indication, however, that “Texas Dolly” will stop playing cash games.  In fact, he responded to a Twitter follower by saying that he was not quitting live poker. All told, Brunson has won over $6 million in his live tournament career, placing him 39th on the all-time money list.

Celebrity High Stakes Poker Ring Busted – Tobey Maquire Not Playing Free Poker

Inside rooms, hidden away in different locations around Los Angeles, high-rollers put down loads of cash on felt-top poker tables. This gives whole new meaning to the words Poker Stars. The scene sets up with Tobey Maguire, Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, and Leonardo DiCaprio sitting in a Hollywood apartment playing high stakes poker ($100,000 buy in) with armed guards standing behind bulletproof glass wearing vests, ensuing no funny business takes place. The only thing is this is not a scene from the new Hollywood summer blockbuster. (However after all the hoopla is said and done a movie is sure to come).  The games were “exclusive events, by invitation only, and that there was a regular roster of players consisting of wealthy celebrities, entrepreneurs, attorneys and businessmen

Leonardo Dicaprio, Matt Damon, Tobey Maguire, and Ben Affleck are among more than a dozen high-profile Hollywood celebrities being sued in connection with a multi-million dollar illegal gambling ring that ran high-stakes underground poker game or poker games, according to Star magazine. This was not a friendly game of free poker.

Tobey Maguire, 35 year old star best known for playing Spider Man, allegedly won upwards of $300,000 from a Beverly Hills hedge fund manager who embezzled investor funds and orchestrated a Ponzi scheme in a desperate attempt to pay off his enormous debt to the star and others. Brad Ruderman the CEO of Ruderman Capital Partners, lost $311,300 to Maguire, including one losing hand of $110,000, on July 30, 2007, it’s claimed.

The FBI investigation into Brad Ruderman, found that he lost somewhere around $25 million of investor money in high stakes poker games held on a twice weekly basis in suites at the luxury Beverly Hills hotel, Four Seasons, and the Viper Room on Sunset Boulevard. For now Ruderman sits in a Texas jail until 2018, convicted on two counts of wire fraud and two counts of investment adviser fraud.

Others who were part of the secret society and are facing hefty lawsuits include billionaire businessman Alex Gore; “The Notebook” director Nick Cassavetes; “Welcome Back, Kotter” star Gabe Kaplan; Paris Hilton’s infamous sex tape partner, Rick Salomon; record label owner Cody Leibel; and Las Vegas nightlife entrepreneur and real-estate developer Andrew Sasson, among others.

DiCaprio, Affleck and Damon are not being sued at this time.

Maguire won as much as $1 million a month over a period of three years, one source told Star magazine. That means he could have made up to $30 to $40 million from these games. Not exactly free poker and under California law, it’s illegal to play for money at underground poker clubs, although it is a crime rarely prosecuted. None of the participants are under criminal investigation, Star has been told.

Damon, according to Star Magazine, played irregularly. While Affleck, impressed players with his poker skills, both DiCaprio and Damon did not do as well, Star reported. “Matt never won,” one player told the magazine. “In truth, Leo is a tight ass. When he lost $50,000 the look in his eyes was obvious he was crazy.”

Federal Crackdown on Online-Poker

In the biggest crackdown on illegal online gambling in history, the three biggest online gambling websites were shut down last Friday, with the founders of the companies indicted by the FBI on charges of bank fraud and money laundering

were shut down. In total, eleven people were charged with running Internet gambling sites violating the 2006 Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act.The FBI also issued restraining orders on a total of 75 bank accounts in 14 nations, allegedly used by the companies to launder billions of dollars in gambling proceeds.

All three of the companies are registered outside the United States. PokerStars is based in Isle of Man, Absolute Poker is registered in Antigua, and Full Tilt is based in Ireland.

“They lied to banks about the true nature of their business. Then, some of the defendants found banks willing to flout the law for a fee. The defendants bet the house that they could continue their scheme, and they lost,” charged FBI Assistant Director Janice K. Fedarcyk.

John Campos, vice chairman at SunFirst Bank in Utah, was arrested on Saturday in St. George, Utah, for allegedly helping Full Tilt and PokerStars launder more than $200 million in recent years. In return, the poker companies invested $10 million each in SunFirst Bank.

According to legal experts, there is some gray area in the 2006 Act around defining what exactly constitutes “Internet gambling,” however, the most severe charges are bank fraud—poker websites allegedly tricking banks into laundering money on their behalf.

Prior to 2006, PartyPoker was the biggest online gambling site in the United States, however, it withdrew from the U.S. market and agreed to pay a $105 million fine.

According to industry news website onlinepoker.net, up to 15 million Americans play online poker, expending $30 billion annually. The two sites have 70 percent market share in the United States and 50 percent globally, earning more than $1 billion annually in profits

With so many people playing poker online is it time for the government to take a second look at the laws that prohibit online gambling or is the federal government justified in prosecuting these companies? Is online gambling safe enough to be legal in the United States? Why is it legal in other countries? Comment below or Tweet me your thoughts @P0kerRyan http://www.twitter.com/p0kerryan
